Happy 101st birthday, Julia Child!

“Maybe the cat has fallen into the stew, or the lettuce has frozen, or the cake has collapsed. Eh bien, tant pis. Usually one's cooking is better than one thinks it is. And if the food is truly vile, then the cook must simply grit her teeth and bear it with a smile, and learn from her mistakes.”

  1. Do you have any Fall stew or soup recipes? Did your grandmothers or parents have a favorite recipe? I assume homemade bread would be part of the mix.

  2. I am still trying to hold on to the last bits of summer, madly canning tomatoes in various forms. Peaches and apples are next, I hope. The appearance in quantity of fall squash at the farmers' market has me wondering what I might do with them. I still want to try this recipe: http://www.animalvegetablemiracle.com/recipes-fall-pumpkin-soup-in-its-shell.htm

I'll have to think about fall recipes. Homemade bread was always part of the mix when I was growing up, but it is not something I have figured out how to incorporate well into my current schedule.

  3. I came looking for Christmas, or Hanukkah, or winter solstice fare. Finding nothing, I hope nothing is wrong and that you are well and perhaps involved in other projects. Your family cooking stories always are heart warming and inspire me. I discovered Vegetarian Times and have tried a couple of recipes. Because of you I made bread and latkes for the first time in years..Just wanted to share and wish you a Happy New Year!!!
